Get the Training You Need for the Health Care Career You Want!

Certificate in Health Care Management

This certificate program is particularly relevant to those trained in professional or technical health care fields who have been promoted or who desire promotion into a managerial or supervisory position in health care. A maximum of six (6) credits can be transferred into this certificate. In addition, the certificate provides a starting point for students considering management careers in a health care environment without making a committment to an associate or baccalaureate degree program.

Required Courses

The seven required courses (22 credits) provide a deeper understanding of the principles of management, health care financing, legal aspects of business, and the development, organization, and evaluation of a health care facility or department: MGMT 301, ACCTG 211, B LAW 243, ECON 002, H P A 101, H P A 332, and H PA 447.

Penn State Beaver will offer this certificate program with the convenience of condensed-format evening classes. 

Introduction to Health Services Organization

HPA 101 (3 credits)
Examination of the social, political, historical, and scientific factors in the development and organization of health services.

Basic Management Concepts

MGMT 101 (3 credits)
Study of fundamental principles and processes applicable to the understanding of management.

Financial and Managerial Accounting for Decision Making

ACCTG 221 (This course is 4 credits, 8 weeks.)
Introduction to the role of accounting numbers in the process of managing a business and in investor decision making.

HPA 332 (3 credits)
Introduction to and analysis of managerial roles and practices in health service organizations.

Legal Environment of Business

B LAW 243 (3 credits)
Social control through laws: courts, basic policies underlying individual and contractual rights in everyday society.

Introductory Microeconomic Analysis and Policy

ECON 002 (3 credits)
Methods of economic analysis and their use; price determination; theory of the firm; distribution.

Financing Health Care

HPA 447 (3 credits)
Analysis of financial flows, third-party payment programs, and reimbursement practices in the health services sector.
